Devoltion in career

"Perpetual devotion to what a man calls his business, is only to be sustained by perpetual neglect of many other things."

--- Robert Louis Stevenson

When one is focusing in one single thing in life, the rest of the things surround him is just the black ground and the the front end that attracts his attention.

If the business is a valuable pursue, the perpetual neglect of many other things may be a worthwhile price one choose to pay...

"South of the Ocean"=下南洋

"South of the Ocean"(下南洋) is a 10-episode documentary on the history of the Nanyang Chinese produced by CCTV.
The team visited different parts of Southeast Asia including Singapore over a period of 3 years. Part of the MV for the title track was shot in Bukit Brown, though it is not really recognisable (see from 3:57 to 4:14).

=====
Be happy with practical stress management tips & resilience tips for staying happy, positive, healthy and sane with Mark Walsh of Integration Training and Achilles. The basics of how to be happy - exercise and sleep, centring , cognitive reframing, gratitude, social support and humour are discussed.
cover the physical basics - stuff my mum said - food, sleep, water, toxin intake, also touch. Need to have a minimum in in all of these - you can't cheat your basic biological system
  • social support and empathy
  • centre
  • reframe your thoughts - realistic optimism, avoid resentment and victim thinking. It's ourt thinking about events not the events themselves that creates stress
  • acceptance - illusion of control and this is stressful
  • play and recreation
  • exercise - relaxed like tai chi or yoga, or fast like squash or running to burn off some energy
  • Meditate - evidence base -it works better than drugs
  • manage environment - order and beauty, nature helps
  • gratitude
  • humour
This video includes the "embodied" approach.
The embodied work practiced by Mark Walsh and Integration Training is based upon a number of disciplines such as aikido, meditation, body therapy and dance.
It is strongly influenced by teachers such as Dr Richard Strozzi-Heckler and the Strozzi Institute (http://www.strozziinstitute.com/), Paul Linden (http://www.being-in-movement.com/), Wendy Palmer (http://embodimentinternational.com/) and Dylan Newcomb (http://www.uzazu.org/). Dialogue in the Dark: DiD

This morning, I went with my friend to Ngee Ann Polytechnic and experienced a tour in the campus called "Dialogue in the Dark."

From this tour, I experience navigating my way in the dark, feel and touch of the wall which makes walking in the dark possible.

With the guide, Hans, we are able to experience taking "River taxi" in the dark, use our hands to read signage, base on touch and felt to distinguish various types of vegetables, fruits and smell spices like clove.  We have a cup of coffee in the dark, and learn to put sugar and cream on our own. Drinking coffee and eating biscuit all in total darkness make us taste them better.

One thing I learned: blind people seldom fall as there are so careful in walking using the walking stick as an aid.

If you wonder how you can go through your daily routine without seeing anything, the tour will inspire you!

I think it makes us treasure what we have and understand how the visually impaired cope with life.

Here is the information from:

Dialogue in the Dark: DiD

About DiD Singapore

What if you had to go through your daily routine without seeing anything?

Dialogue in the Dark (DiD) Singapore puts visitors in everyday situations - except in complete darkness. Simple things like crossing the street or visiting a hawker centre suddenly become extraordinary challenges.

Visitors must navigate the exhibition in the dark, with the help of guides who are blind. This is a fresh kind of experiential learning, very hands-on and thought-provoking.

The sensory adventure of Dialogue in the Dark Singapore offers a unique learning opportunity for visitors of all ages.

Darkness opens visitors to new ways of experiencing the world around them. Visitors learn what it means to live without sight. In having to navigate darkened environments, they also appreciate the value of effective communication and understand those who see the world differently.

Dialogue in the Dark Singapore is an exclusive collaboration between Ngee Ann Polytechnic (through Social Lab Ltd) and Dialogue Social Enterprise. Originally founded in Germany, Dialogue in the Dark has reached 30 countries and more than 150 cities across Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the Americas since 1988.

Over 6 million visitors worldwide have experienced what it means to hear, smell, taste and touch things without being able to see them.

Singapore’s exhibition is the first permanent Dialogue in the Dark site in Southeast Asia, and the first in the world located within an educational institution.

Strategically sited in Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Dialogue in the Dark Singapore is a teaching and learning facility for Ngee Ann students.

Young people studying relevant diplomas also help in the running of Dialogue in the Dark Singapore, giving them valuable experience in running a real social enterprise. In addition, our staff and students conduct research into issues facing the disabled in Singapore.

Dialogue in the Dark Singapore offers tours, Lunch in the Dark and we conduct Educational Workshops for Upper Primary and Secondary school students. We also offer Corporate Workshops for adult professionals, focusing on team-building, communication and leadership.

MISSION

Dialogue in the Dark Singapore aims to raise awareness and facilitate inclusion of marginalized people in our community. Our vision of social integration goes beyond just helping the blind. In the darkness, we can no longer see differences of race, class, and religion.

We also believe more employment opportunities should be given to the disabled. Dialogue in the Dark Singapore only employs the blind as guides in the dark rooms of our exhibition.

Objectives
  • Increase social awareness of people with visual and other impairments
  • Change mindsets to encourage and promote an inclusive society
  • Promote employment for the disabled, in partnership with community-minded companies and organisations
=====

Try to experience it yourself and you will learn a lot through your own journey!

    Resources on library display

I just like to share some resources on organizing reading activities and displaying of library materials:

Just google "pinterest library displays" and look at the links.  There are many good ideas to follow.

I had some pin collected and there are listed in:

There are lot of art and craft ideas used in Libary and book displays there!

For actual display work, you may start with any art and craft books that are available in your library or NLB and modify the ideas for library display! (Book on library display is not helpful as there are not up-todate!)

Self learning is not easy, yet nothing is impossible! Start with things that you can make first and move on...

If your Library Co-ordinator can form a class for teachers and student librarians, I would then be able to impart some ideas in person, and you may learn from hands-on workshop.

For more information on courses I run, visit:

    Hope the information is helpful!

Twenty Rules for Better Book Displays

I enjoy doing and conducting training in Library and the topic I like most is Library display.  Some of the courses I conduct are listed at http://innoworkshop.blogspot.sg/search/label/Library%20display

Today, I read the following article would like to share the author's view on how to create an impressive book display.

I have the main points extracted, and if you click the link, you can read the full article:

    =====

Twenty Rules for Better Book Displays

    by Susan Brown

    http://www.ebscohost.com/novelist/novelist-special/twenty-rules-for-better-book-displays

    1. Displays should reflect your patrons' interests, not your personal interests.

    2. Displays should be popular. While a fair amount of time might be spent filling a display fixture, the ultimate goal is for that fixture to be empty.

    3. The books should be the stars of the display.

    4. Don't limit yourself to books.

    5. While the books are the stars, eye-catching visual signage is extremely important.

    6. Choose a simple, readable font over an intricate one.

    7. If there is an icon or other key visual element associated with the theme of the display, be sure to include it in the signage.

    8. Use props judiciously.

    9. You want them to check display items out, so make it clear that they can.

    10. Add value.

    11. Cross promote.

    12. Use Chase's Calendar of Events judiciously.

    13. Let pop culture inspire your displays.

    14. Let current events inspire your displays.

    15. Let your community inspire your displays.

    16. Consider moving beyond tightly themed displays to more general ones that can be used anytime – or continuously

    17. Promote "hidden" collections, but only if they pass muster with Rule #1.

    18. Unless the items are priceless or irreplaceable, do not put book displays behind glass.

    19. Be flexible. Be willing and ready to change plans and throw up a display based on the news of the day.

    20. Have fun! Displays should be fun, both for you to create and for your customers to browse.

    Never mind what others do...

Never mind what others do; do better than yourself, beat your own record from day to day, and you are a success.

    RDA in 10 Easy Steps

    Published on Feb 8, 2013
    http://ala.org/alcts

    An ALCTS webinar.

Resource Description and Access (RDA) is the successor to the cataloging rules, AACR2. RDA completely revamps the structure of the cataloging instructions by closely following the entity-relationship model used to construct databases. However, as complex as these changes are, they can be reduced to ten easy steps. Join in on a walkthrough of the new structure. A demonstration of how a simple book can be cataloged with RDA helps catalogers understand the new structure and makes it easier to navigate RDA and find related instructions for other resources.

RDA for the Non-Cataloger - What's in it for You?

This video makes the understanding RDA easier. This is good for cataloger too!

    An ALCTS webinar.

Many libraries will be implementing Resource Description & Access (RDA) early in 2013. What will this mean for technical services and other library staff? How are RDA records different from AACR2 records? This webinar provides a general overview of the changes in RDA, particularly those affecting staff in technical services and those noticeable in the OPAC. No knowledge of current cataloging standards or MARC required! This session does not teach how to catalog with RDA, but it can be a useful foundation for catalogers new to RDA as well as other library staff and administrators.

Like to share my reading today:

Yvonne Yin's memories of Mrs Margaret Thatcher

Just received the following email message from my friend Yvonne Yin:

    =====
The Telegraph, a British newspaper, invited its readers to share their memories, thoughts, etc. re Lady Thatcher. They have kindly published my contribution:

I was a Malaysian secondary schoolgirl in Kuala Lumpur (KL) in 1977 when our trainee teacher asked us to imagine we were interviewing someone who had arrived from the future in a time machine and to compile a list of questions and answers. My question no. 2 was:
Will Mrs. Margaret Thatcher become Prime Minister of Britain?

And the answer I provided was: "Yes, she will. She will steer [the] British economy out of the doldrums and put an end to 'closed shop' unions". (For the record, I have kept my composition book to this day).

Later, in 1979, my father, Jordan Yin, happened to be in England during the General Election campaigning. As he had to return before the election on May 3rd, he drafted a letter to Mrs Thatcher and addressed it to No. 10, Downing Street because "I know this is where you'll be after the election."

I can still remember his scream of surprise and delight when, on 23rd May, barely 3 weeks after the election, he received a handwritten thank-you letter from Mrs Thatcher herself.

What a great link I have from someone who I know for years!

    It makes my day!

    Cheers!

    Library@Chinatown

Today I followed LAS Programmes and Social Committee for a visit to Library@Chinatown.

    About Library@Chinatown
    ---------------------------------
library@chinatown officially opened on 31 Jan 2013, by the Acting Minster for Culture, Community and Youth and Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Communications and Information.

With an total floor area of 1,000 square meters, it is the first themed library on Chinese arts and culture, library@chinatown will offer a curated collection that will cater to both arts and cultural enthusiasts and the general public, who are keen in learning more about Chinese arts and culture.

Date of visit: 04 Apr 2013 (Thur)
    Time: 4.00pm to 5.00pm
    Meeting point: Outside
#04-12, Chinatown Point for attendance taking first.

    Program
    -----------
    4.00pm – Registration with LAS co-ordinator
4.05pm – Guided tour (Estimated an hour including questions and answers)
    5pm – End of Event

With the visit and guided tour, I learnt more about the operation of the Library at Chinatown:

    * Shelving mostly done by volunteers!
    * Programmes are organised by NLB, with volunteer speakers on themes related to Chinese culture and subjects that have some links to the collection
    * Only non fiction books for adults in English and Chinese are in the collection. Fiction for adults, is excluded, due to space constraints.
    * CD, DVD or any AV media with single volume and single disk is in the collection.  Multiple parts, or multiple disks in one physical unit is hard for circulation control, hence will not be in the collection for the moment.
    * Shelving is in broad call numbers sequence, up to the first 3 digits only.
    * Colour coded book labels, discontinued by NLB in late 2012 are  inter-shelved with black and white call numbers labels, adopted by NLB now.
    * All books are acquired and catalogued by NLB, library@chinatown is a circulation point, with a work room of 2 working desks and a pantry area for staff and volunteers.
    * All books return via RFID auto scan book drop will be double scanned one at a time to ensure that no mistake occurred in the returning process.
    * Officer who is on duties till 9pm will close the library with a passage way created inside the library leading to emergency exit that complied with fire safety requirement.

I visited the library@chinatown a few times, yet, it is not easy to see the way the library is managed. This visit let me see something new and gain some insightful knowledge.

Thanks to LAS Programmes and Social Committee for organising the tour!
