【一席YiXi】梁紹鴻：功夫六十年

不善言辭的梁紹鴻，他的每一句都是真實的，是那些真正把握功夫的人   

梁绍鸿（Duncan Leung ， Leung Shiu Hung），1942年6月11日出生于香港，他13岁的时候（1955年）被好友李小龙介绍至叶问门下，成为叶问第一个私家授课门徒，请叶问到家授课达四、五年之久，完成了叶问系咏春拳全部课程。

梁紹鴻1942年出生於香港，13歲由好友李小龍介紹到葉問門下，成為授課門徒。1974年移居美國紐約，在當地建立自己的拳館。談起已逝去多年的少年好友李小龍，他說，李小龍比他大兩歲，喜歡學功夫喜歡約會女孩子，之前李小龍學習功夫疏於練習，後來因為被人家打了兩次，就下苦功夫練習。尤其跟葉問學習後，進步很快，所以他也拜葉問為師。
作為葉問的弟子，梁紹鴻也因此成為王家衛電影「一代宗師」中梁朝偉的詠春拳師傅，他說，當時王家衛找他，讓他教梁朝偉功夫。最初他表示自己雖然認識很多電影圈的人，但是對電影沒興趣。不過王家衛說要動真格的學，他就前後教了梁朝偉兩年。他表示梁朝偉非常有天分，比李小龍聰明且做事低調，雖然不可能像行內人那麼搏命練習，但其優勝之處在於沒有任何功夫枷鎖和陋習，對其訓練講究穩紮穩打，循序漸進，從基本動作開始兼力量訓練最後進行實戰對抗。
說起真實的葉問，梁紹鴻說，電影中的葉問和現實裡的葉問有很大出入，當年葉問做師傅的時候已是人生失意期，沒有正當工作，只能靠教功夫才能養活老婆孩子。武館教十幾個學生，每個學生收幾塊錢，有時還沒有學生。
不過葉問很少說自己的事，但教功夫很有一套，告訴學生要學功夫就去打吧，不打怎麼知道行不行。不去打就不知道自己的功夫深淺。這種學習方式很適合梁紹鴻，他說，他從小不喜歡讀書，學歷不過小學畢業。他就喜歡打架，每天去醫院都是家常便飯，打架打多了就自然曉得功夫的奧妙。
現在70多歲的梁紹鴻領悟到功夫其實就是一種哲學，他說，作為人類，身體是有極限的，會老會病會有很多身體無法做到的事情，但智慧沒有極限。學習功夫不是單純模仿老師的一招一式，而是要學會自我創新和挑戰老師，在實戰中體會功夫各種力道的槓桿原理，以小勝大，以弱勝強。
梁紹鴻原本住在維吉尼亞州，但因治病要長期在加州停留，因此萌生在此地傳授功夫的想法。他說，如今學功夫的人越來越少，因為沒有時間堅持練習，打架也不再是肉搏而是使用武器，他只想在生命結束前，把自己對功夫的理解和經驗傳承下去。
在梁紹鴻20日授課現場匯集男女老幼，各個族裔。他不僅傳授詠春理論，還現場和學生演繹過招。他說，詠春拳首先要注意不是拼狠，而是不要被對方打到，不要受傷，之後要學習的才是要如何打別人，功夫的關鍵不是防守而是進攻。

Attitude, skills and knowledge

After years of teaching and training in Temasek Polytechnic, National Institute of Education and Library Association of Singapore (WDA courses) for various groups of students and course participants, I understand that learning can be a joyful or painful process for different learners.

If one is willing to learn, one will make the learning process a joyful experience. 

It is hard, sometimes even impossible, to force an unwilling learner to learn anything. When one is being forced to learn, the learning process is usually a painful one.

I enjoy learning new things. I find learning a joyful process, as I am able to learn things that interest me, most of the time. I also enjoy the process of sharing my learning through teaching.

Learners who set their mind in negative mode will find learning a painful process. They are not interested in the subject matter or not able to find meaning in learning the subject matter.

Hence, it is important to choose the subject of learning that match your interest, or give meaning to something that you need to master.

I enjoy training adult learners, as most of them are willing learners. Their interest makes training an interactive sharing session, and I learn a lot more from them.

I find that if learners are willing to learn something, they usually have some basic knowledge or keen interest on the subject matter.

This makes their learning flow with ease. Trainers likes me, is just the guide that provide them with directions and pointers. The process of their learning is similar to doing Soduko, they are able to find or discover something new from something they already know.

Acquiring new skills is just like creating a new building. It is like modelling using Lego sets.  If you have the essential blocks, the building block process will let you learn and master the new skills.

With the right attitude in learning, skills will be acquired and knowledge accumulated.

I refine my learning through teaching and training, and putting things into practice.

Practice makes perfect. For learner and trainer, if they like to perfect their skills, they need to have multiple practice.  Without practice, you cannot demonstrate your learning and refine it.

Once your skills are being refined by practice, you will transform your learning to a higher level--the master of special skills, who has a good knowledge of the skills set.

Through teaching, you share your learning journey and lead others to travel the same path. Knowledge is accumulated through understanding, and with lot of  practice on the subject matter.

With that, the learner will become a master, a teacher or a trainer.

It sounds easy, yet, it is a long journey!

If it is your interest, the long journey is an interesting one!

I like to learn things and master them, and share my learning through teaching.  This quotation makes me understand my learning process, doing instinct and passions in teaching better.

It is impossible to force any unwilling learner to learn anything.  If one is willing to learn something, one already has some basic knowledge or keen interest of the subject matter.

Volouteer work: Asian Festival of Children's Content (AFCC) 2014

 My experience of the five days volunteer work for Asian Festival of Children's Content (AFCC) 2014 was rewarding.

I do not like work, yet being volunteer, I can choose to enjoy something I like in work, and that make the volunteering work an opportunities for self discovery.

The rich contents in the Asian Festival of Children's Content (AFCC) 2014 is great for some one like me who enjoy children's content in general, and having the chance to see the changing landscape of the publishing world is something enlightening.

I do like to explore further into this areas of work and hope more learning opportunity will come my way in the future...

When I conduct training, I like to share the ideas of learning the reference points instead of learning the fact and remembering them.

I think it is through telling, explaining and demonstrating that we transfer our learning and knowledge on certain subject matter, which is limited in range.

If we can lead them to learn by "referring" to the pool of knowledge with good indexing tools or reference points, the power of learning will be endless.

With the "reference learning method", one can expands on the knowledge domain and boarder one's zone of understanding.

Do not be afraid that you cannot remember all the facts and details, no one does.

If you know where to get and verify the facts and details when you need them, you will have no problem of creating your knowledge domain in the long run.

Finding and creating yourself

I think most of us are searching the path to find ourselves and the meaning of life in this earthy journey. Along the way, we created something different to call "self" and life fulfilment!

It is not possible and sometime a bit hard for most of us not to create something along the path we travel. We live a normal life, yet, it is normal not to repeat the way other did with their lives!

I find my creative incentive in my daily life, in library work, in learning and reading or in training new or old subjects!
It is the joys of having or experiencing something new from the world I lived, the people and events I experienced that make my days!

Sometime it is creation from my own explorations or with my hand works, sometime it is conversation with the like-minded and new works that give me great thrills in life and keep me going!

Personally, I think "creating" works for me! I find it easier to create something new than to follow something in existing practice. 

It is "be" and "through the creation process", some self discovery is found and done. 

I think to teach or train someone to do something is easy if we allow creation to happen naturally in the learning journey!

That is why I enjoy teaching and training as no session is the same. The learners, trainees and participants are creative souls that enrich the sessions.

Teaching is the way I share my experience and with the little light I hold, I can light up many candles that make the room illuminated. 

When you are in the room with bright hearts that are shining and mirroring one another, learning is joyful and training is contentment!

I read "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" in the late 70's and like Richard Bach's writing.  The above quotation I just received from an email makes me recall my reading experience in my younger days and I hope to read other titles written by him in the near future. 
 
The experience in reading I had in the late 70's may not be the same now, and I would like to see the changes.
 
Maybe we are just learners who like to find out what we already know! 
 
By demonstrating what we know, we become the doers.
 
With the abilities to do and share, we teach.  It then helps to remind ourselves and others what we like to repeat in our learning.
 
Hence, like many others who enjoy teaching and training, I just do it and let the learners who already know understand how well they know!
 
That may conclude my recent experience in teaching and assessing "Bibliograhic Control" module for library support staff.
 
If you do not know the subject matter, it is hard to learn and master it through short courses!
 
For the Bibliograhic Contral module, attending the course is finding out what you already know. Doing is demonstrating that you know it. Teaching and conducting training, allow the trainers to remind learners that they know the subject matters well enough to gain more understanding from the training.
