Teochew Song ~ 出花园 ~

It is a nice song and a good a documentary of Teochew culture.

This is a very old Teochew custom when a teenages turn fifteen years old, 出花园 ~ (Out of the Garden or stepping out of the garden) is prepared for them.

This video brings back sweet memories. I went through this Teochew customs when I was 15.

As a history graduate, I think it is important for us Teochews to understand our culture. When I view this video, it is very interesting to see how it was done in China as I remembered only the red clog that I had to wear on that day.

If you family still practises Teochew traditional customs, I think your parents or grand parents will do it for you when you turn 15, no matter if you are a boy or girl!

I think all my siblings gone through this when they turn 15. Unfortunately, most of my nephews and nieces do not have such an experience as my mum do not like to force it upon the parents.

That make me think of my grandmum who gave me this fond and sweet memory as she thought it is a must for all her grandchildren.

Grandmum, thanks and you are always in my memory even you live beyond this world since June 2005.

Keep our fickle nature under control

We could have a chance to realize our ambitions at work if we can maintain commitment and determination. Just keep our fickle nature under control and work on something we value and we will harvest what we sow.

If we are inattentive in dealing with financial or day to day issues, such as insurance policies or family budget, it may be costly in the long run.

If there is a problem we think it will arise, try to be open and resolve the problem before it escalates.

Better and worst

When things are bad, we take comfort in the thought that they could always be worse.

And when they are, we find hope in the thought that things are so bad they have to get better.

Dao De Jing 道德经 in English

Information from Youtube:

http://ekbtv.blogspot.com/

1

The tao that can be told
is not the eternal Tao
The name that can be named
is not the eternal Name.

The unnamable is the eternally real.
Naming is the origin
of all particular things.

Free from desire, you realize the mystery.
Caught in desire, you see only the manifestations.

Yet mystery and manifestations
arise from the same source.
This source is called darkness.

Darkness within darkness.
The gateway to all understanding.

2

When people see some things as beautiful,
other things become ugly.
When people see some things as good,
other things become bad.

Being and non-being create each other.
Difficult and easy support each other.
Long and short define each other.
High and low depend on each other.
Before and after follow each other.

Therefore the Master
acts without doing anything
and teaches without saying anything.
Things arise and she lets them come;
things disappear and she lets them go.
She has but doesn't possess,
acts but doesn't expect.
When her work is done, she forgets it.
That is why it lasts forever.

3

If you overesteem great men,
people become powerless.
If you overvalue possessions,
people begin to steal.

The Master leads
by emptying people's minds
and filling their cores,
by weakening their ambition
and toughening their resolve.
He helps people lose everything
they know, everything they desire,
and creates confusion
in those who think that they know.

Practice not-doing,
and everything will fall into place.

4

The Tao is like a well:
used but never used up.
It is like the eternal void:
filled with infinite possibilities.

It is hidden but always present.
I don't know who gave birth to it.
It is older than God.

5

The Tao doesn't take sides;
it gives birth to both good and evil.
The Master doesn't take sides;
she welcomes both saints and sinners.

The Tao is like a bellows:
it is empty yet infinitely capable.
The more you use it, the more it produces;
the more you talk of it, the less you understand.

Hold on to the center.

6

The Tao is called the Great Mother:
empty yet inexhaustible,
it gives birth to infinite worlds.

It is always present within you.
You can use it any way you want.

7

The Tao is infinite, eternal.
Why is it eternal?
It was never born;
thus it can never die.
Why is it infinite?
It has no desires for itself;
thus it is present for all beings.

The Master stays behind;
that is why she is ahead.
She is detached from all things;
that is why she is one with them.
Because she has let go of herself,
she is perfectly fulfilled.

8

The supreme good is like water,
which nourishes all things without trying to.
It is content with the low places that people disdain.
Thus it is like the Tao.

In dwelling, live close to the ground.
In thinking, keep to the simple.
In conflict, be fair and generous.
In governing, don't try to control.
In work, do what you enjoy.
In family life, be completely present.

When you are content to be simply yourself
and don't compare or compete,
everybody will respect you.

9

Fill your bowl to the brim
and it will spill.
Keep sharpening your knife
and it will blunt.
Chase after money and security
and your heart will never unclench.
Care about people's approval
and you will be their prisoner.

Do your work, then step back.
The only path to serenity.

10

Can you coax your mind from its wandering
and keep to the original oneness?
Can you let your body become
supple as a newborn child's?
Can you cleanse your inner vision
until you see nothing but the light?
Can you love people and lead them
without imposing your will?
Can you deal with the most vital matters
by letting events take their course?
Can you step back from you own mind
and thus understand all things?

Giving birth and nourishing,
having without possessing,
acting with no expectations,
leading and not trying to control:
this is the supreme virtue.

Reinventing Libraries

Reinventing Libraries: Sharing by 3 Speakers from the Library Services Network (for Europe)

Part 1 : Partnership as an Aggregator in Reinventing the Libraries
by Heddi Mortesen, Director, Danish Bibliographic Centre

Part 2 : Five Steps to Better Services for Better Libraries
by Dr Jorg Meyer, CEO, ekz.bibliotheksservice GmbH Reutlingen

Part 3 : Trends and Development in the Netherlands Library
by Henk Das, CEO, NBD/Biblion

Date : 17 March 2009 (Tuesday)

Time : 4.00pm - 6.00pm

Venue : National Library Building Multi Purpose Room, Basement 1, Central Public Library, National Library Building

It is interesting to hear from Librarians and Library Vendors sharing their experience in running library services or providing library services in three European countries (Danmark, Germany and The Netherlands) with a different scales.

With more and more basic library tasks/functions being run or provided by external commercial bodies, librarians in the library will be the buyer or purchaser of the external services. I think librarians now need a different set of skills as they are not required to do the jobs, but need to know how to assess and evaluate jobs done by commercial bodies or vendors.

The professional librarians who are managing the library now will need more management skills in addition to professional knowledge.

The indepth understanding of basic library operations (Acquisition, Cataloguing, Reference Service and Indexing etc) may not the core of Librarianship. Librarians nowadays do not need to know how to catalogue a book themselves, nevertheless, they need to know how to evaluate the digital catalogue and MARC record created by the vendors.

Would that means that professional librarian will be less in demands?

The positive answer is if you have professional qualification, you need not work in Library, you can work for Library Vendors/Suppliers. I see the trend in Singapore library world as some of the librarians are already moving toward that ends.

So for those who like to catalogue books, for example, you need not be a cataloguer in the library, you can be a cataloguer in a Library supply company!

Bilingual Quotation

The following are some quotations I received from friends:

===

通常愿意留下来跟你争吵的人

才是真正爱你的人

Usually the person who is willing to stay behind and fight with you, is the one that truly love/like you.

===

有时候 不是对方不在乎你

而是你把对方看得太重

Sometimes, you think that the other party does not seems to care about you,

but it might be you who is overly concern.

===

朋友就是把你看透了

还能喜欢你的人

Friends are people who can see through you, and still be able to like you.

===

Believe 中间也藏了一个 lie

In the word “BELIEVE”, it has a hidden “LIE”.

===

真正的好朋友

并不是在一起就有聊不完的话题

而是在一起 就算不说话

也不会感到尴尬

True friends are not people whom you get together and have unlimited things to talk about,

but they are people who, when not talking, you won’t feel awkward to be around with.

Giver vs Taker

What is the difference between "Givers" and "Takers"?

Everyone of us gives or takes for different reasons. Giving or taking behaviors are characterized by the use of power plays or other controlling behaviors.

There are four basic combinations of "giver" and "taker":

Givers Who Give;

Givers Who Take;

Takers Who Give; and

Takers Who Take.

In the process of giving and taking, there are four types of manipulators:

the "Poor Me";

the "Aloof";

the "interrogator" and

the "Intimidator"

Being engaged in the moment

People who are “being” are fully present.

They are totally engaged in the moment.

This engagement includes an easy appreciation and sense of connection with whomever or whatever they are relating to at the time.

These people are aware of a job well done or a difficulty surmounted and will respect and often acknowledge the person who has accomplished it.

Being” is a state of heart and mind that is receptive and able to listen carefully.

Libraries Driving Access to Knowledge

As a life member of LAS (Library Association of Singapore), I received the invitation from NLB and registered for the following talk:

"Libraries Driving Access to Knowledge"

Speaker: Ms Ellen Remona Tise,
President-Elect of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) & Senior Director, Library and Information Services at University of Stellenbosch, South Africa
Date : 23 February 2009 (Monday)
Time : 3.00 pm - 4.30 pm
Venue : Visitor Briefing Room, Level 1, National Library Building

It is always good to hear other's view about library world and library trends. Here are some points I like:

Dictionary definition: access means availability or support.

Access to libraries = mean that “ the library is available, with some limitations, to anyone who wants to use it”.

Access to information is a more complex concept.
As the term is used in our profession, we usually mean making information available.

The concept of freedom of access to information is perhaps most clearly outlined in Article 19 of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights. According to this, all human beings have the fundamental right to have access to all expressions of knowledge, creativity and intellectual activity, and to express their thoughts in public.

Access to knowledge is critical for the development and growth of society.

Implicit role in theme is that of social inclusion and librarians becoming active change agents in society.

Libraries: gateways to knowledge.

Access alone: not enough.
Extending our services, methods, practices

Some Barriers to Access to Knowledge
*Lack of significant usage access
*Non availability of content
*Costs
*Copyright legislation
*Librarians

How can libraries drive access to knowledge?
*Libraries fundamental role to play in building knowledge societies
*Librarians expertise to transform ‘digital divide into digital opportunities’
*Librarians value in researching, assessing, organising, describing, managing information
*Remain at forefront, library buildings and services to be redesigned to reach the user
*Innovative approaches to quarantee free and universal access to relevant knowledge

Summary
*Ensure that the world’s citizenry have access to the world’s knowledge
*Dismantle barriers to access
*Urgency for libraries to drive access to knowledge
*Active librarianship to support development
*Ensure that libraries stay on the agenda
*Libraries continue to travel beyond borders

Libraries Driving Access to Knowledge
Encompasses IFLA’s three major advocacy themes:
*Freedom: Freedom of access to information and freedom of expression
*Equity:Fair and sustainable legal and economic relationships between the creators, intermediaries and users of information
*Inclusion: the role of the library in the Information Society and the role of the library as an agency of social inclusion

中华舒氏网论坛

今天我看舒氏的网站, 我心里很兴奋!

作为舒氏一员, 其实我早就想找找舒氏的历史文献!

Maybe, it is time to let those who addressed me as Dexterine Ho Soo Miang know that my father's original surname is Soo, or 舒, he adopted "Ho" as his surname during World War II. In his and our NRIC, our Surname is Ho, yet, in our heart, we identify 舒 as our surname!

As my father cannot changed his surname back to 舒, (the story is rather long and I will share it later) to make us remember our original surname, all his six children were given 舒 as the middle name.

舒 is Soo in Teo Chew and Shu in Hanyu Pinyi.

Well, for the story of my father's original surname, I will share it later. Now just let me guide you to learn more about 舒 as a surname via:

Warren Buffett: some of his quotations

A public opinion poll is no substitute for thought.

If past history was all there was to the game, the richest people would be librarians.

Risk comes from not knowing what you’re doing.

Chains of habit are too light to be felt until they are too heavy to be broken.

I don’t look to jump over 7-foot bars: I look around for 1-foot bars that I can step over.

If a business does well, the stock eventually follows.

In the business world, the rear-view mirror is always clearer than the windshield.

It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.

It’s better to hang out with people better than you. Pick out associates whose behavior is better than yours and you’ll drift in that direction.

It’s far better to buy a wonderful company at a fair price than a fair company at a wonderful price.

Of the billionaires I have known, money just brings out the basic traits in them. If they were jerks before they had money, they are simply jerks with a billion dollars.

Warren Buffet's advice for 2009

Warren Buffet's advice for 2009

We begin this New Year with dampened enthusiasm and dented optimism.

Our happiness is diluted and our peace is threatened by the financial illness that has infected our families, organizations and nations.

Everyone is desperate to find a remedy that will cure their financial illness and help them recover their financial health.

They expect the financial experts to provide them with remedies, forgetting the fact that it is these experts who created this financial mess.

Every new year, I adopt a couple of old maxims as my beacons to guide my future.

This self-prescribed therapy has ensured that with each passing year, I grow wiser and not older.

This year, I invite you to tap into the financial wisdom of our elders along with me, and become financially wiser.

* Hard work: All hard work bring a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.

* Laziness: A sleeping lobster is carried away by the water current.

* Earnings: Never depend on a single source of income. [At least make your Investments get you second earning]

* Spending: If you buy things you don't need, you'll soon sell things you need.

* Savings: Don't save what is left after spending; spend what is left after saving.

* Borrowings: The borrower becomes the lender's slave.

* Accounting: It's no use carrying an umbrella, if your shoes are leaking.

* Auditing: Beware of little expenses; A small leak can sink a large ship.

* Risk-taking: Never test the depth of the river with both feet. [Have an alternate plan ready]

* Investment: Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

I'm certain that those who have already been practicing these principles remain financially healthy.

I'm equally confident that those who resolve to start practicing these principles will quickly regain their financial health.

Let us become wiser and lead a happy, healthy, prosperous and peaceful life.

Workshop Outline

Lesson 1
1. Folksonomies – Indexing without rules (with practical work of the participants).
2. Folksonomies in information services and library catalogues.

Lesson 2
3. Folksonomies and knowledge representation.
4. Folksonomies and information retrieval.

Lesson 3
5. Tag Gardening for folksonomy enrichment and maintenance.
6. Find "more like me"! The social function of a folksonomy.

What I had learned:

After attending the workshop, I understand the term "Folksonomy" is "Folk + taxonomy".
Recalling what we learned in library school, it is like free text indexing by common folk.

To understand it better, you may like to read what I clip from wikipedia:

"Folksonomy (also known as collaborative tagging, social classification, social indexing, and social tagging) is the practice and method of collaboratively creating and managing tags to annotate and categorize content. Folksonomy describes the bottom-up classification systems that emerge from social tagging. In contrast to traditional subject indexing, metadata is generated not only by experts but also by creators and consumers of the content. Usually, freely chosen keywords are used instead of a controlled vocabulary.[2] Folksonomy (from folk + taxonomy) is a user-generated taxonomy."

Source of information:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folksonomy

As someone who searches databases for decades. I can see the popularity of folksonomy will generate a lot of work for Librarians or Information Professional in record cleaning and record management.

If these type of work can be translated to "Jobs" for Librarian or Information Professional , I am optimitic that Librarian or Information Professional will be in great demands in future.

Here are some criticism on Folksonomy I read from wikipedia:

"Folksonomy is criticized because its lack of terminological control causes it to be more likely to produce unreliable and inconsistent results. If tags are freely chosen (instead of taken from a given vocabulary), synonyms (multiple tags for the same concept), homonymy (same tag used with different meaning), and polysemy (same tag with multiple related meanings) are likely to arise, lowering the efficiency of content indexing and searching.[4] Other reasons for meta noise are the lack of stemming (normalization of word inflections) and the heterogeneity of users and contexts.

Classification systems have several problems: they can be slow to change, they reflect (and reinforce) a particular worldview, they are rooted in the culture and era that created them, and they can be absurd at times. Idiosyncratic folksonomic classification within a clique can especially reinforce pre-existing viewpoints. Folksonomies are routinely generated by people who have spent a great deal of time interacting with the content they tag, and may not properly identify the content's relationship to external items."

Visit to "Reflections at Bukit Chandu"

Reflections at Bukit Chandu is the name of the Museum, as it sounds very much like a title of a book, it takes me some time before I can link it to a site, and unlink it with an image of a book!

I was a Librarian for too long and the habit is hard to change!

Well, it is the visit to "Reflections at Bukit Chanduon" that made the link sealed in my mind.

How the visit take place:

NLB offered 10 slots for LAS members (non-NLB staff) to join the group for this visit, I was fortunate to be one of the 10.

Transportation was provided from the National Library Building to Reflections at Bukit Chandu and return.

Some of the members go on their own, I find it easier to meet the group at 2.15pm and take the Bus from NLB.

Reflections at Bukit Chandu is located at 31-K Pepys Road, Singapore 118458. It is a WWII Interpretative Centre that presents the local perspective of the war in the Far East, and is located close to where the Battle of Pasir Panjang, one of the last significant battles fought in Singapore, took place.

It emphasis on the battles fought in Singapore, and the Malay Regiment who defended the Pasir Panjang area, it is an excellent prelude to the stories displayed in the exhibition gallery at Memories at Old Ford Factory.

If you enjoyed the tour organised by LAS to Memories at Old Ford Factory like me, you may like to visit Reflections at Bukit Chandu to find out more about the Malayan Campaign and the bravery of the Malay Regiment soldiers.

If it is hard to take a day off to visit the site and see the real things, the web site at:

http://www.s1942.org.sg/s1942/bukit_chandu/homepage.htm

will be a good alternative.

Here is our Programme of the day:

2.15 pm Meet at the VIP drop-off area, The Plaza, National Library (facingVictoria Street)

2.20 pm Bus leaves NL Building

2.50 pm Arrival at Reflections at Bukit Chandu

3.00-5.00 pm Tour5.05 pm Bus leaves Reflections at Bukit Chandu

5.30 pm Bus arrives at NL Building

If you liket to visit the Centre at 31K Pepys Road S(118458), here is the Driving directions I found from the web page:

For a quick 30-minute drive from the city, take AYE and exit at South Buona Vista Road towards Pasir Panjang Road. At the end of South Buona Vista Road, turn left into Pasir Panjang Road and turn left again at the 5th junction to enter Pepys Road. Free parking is available at Carparks C and D.

The place is hard to find, and this location map will be very useful.
Print a copy and followng the map, you will less likely to have the problem locating it!

http://www.s1942.org.sg/s1942/bukit_chandu/location.htm

Just note that like many museums in Singapore, Reflections at Bukit Chandu is closed on Monday.

Opening Hours: Tuesdays - Sundays, 9am - 5pm

I invite

every minister, every priest,

every rabbi, every teacher, every guru,

every Master, every president, every prime minister,

every king, every queen, every leader, every nation,

every political party

to issue one statement that would heal the world:

OURS IS NOT A BETTER WAY, OURS IS MERELY ANOTHER WAY.

-- Neale Donald Walsch
Yours is a culture that has long used physical pain as a punishment for unwanted behavior not only in children, but in adults.

You actually kill people to get people to stop killing people.

It is insanity to use the energy that created a problem to seek to solve the problem.

It is insanity to repeat the behaviors you want to stop in order to stop them.

It is insanity to model behaviors all over your society that you say you do not want your offspring to copy.

And the highest insanity is pretending that none of this is happening, then wondering why your children are acting insane.

-- Neale Donald Walsch

The cure for boredom

The cure for boredom is curiosity.

There is no cure for curiosity.

-- Dorothy Parker

Commitment to excellence

The quality of a person's life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor.

-- Vince Lombardi, 1913-1970

No 'self-made' man.

There is no such thing as a 'self-made' man.

We are made up of thousands of others.

Everyone who has ever done a kind deed for us, or spoken one word of encouragement to us, has entered into the make-up of our character and of our thoughts, as well as our success.

-- George Burton Adams (1851 - 1925)
Contentment comes as the infallible result of great acceptances,

great humilities—of not trying to make ourselves this or that

(to conform to some dramatized version of ourselves),

but of surrendering ourselves to the fullness of life—of letting life flow through us.

-- David Grayson

It is like what Lao Zhi said in Dao Te Jing,

Nature flows and grows if human being do not block and destroy it!

Let go!

Let life flow through us!

Christmas and New Year Gift

Christmas and New Year gift suggestions:

To your enemy, forgiveness.

To an opponent, tolerance.

To a friend, your heart.

To a customer, service.

To all, charity.

To every child, a good example.

To yourself, respect.

-- Oren Arnold

To prepare the gift, you need time to calm your mind, open your heart, refine your thought and be mindful about your behaviour. When you are ready to give, learn to wrap it up nicely and present it to those who are readly or glad to receive.

Some time, a gift given at the wrong time, to a wrong person, with a wrong thought, or in a wrong way may make the gift unwanted.

Precise gift not accepted or unwanted, is wasted.

Today is Christmas, and to start giving, just do the last thing first:

Give yourself a great gift today: Respect

and the rest will fall in nicely!

Cheers!

Flexibility vs rigid

Flexible person do not fear changes, and rigid people are just the reverse.

Learn to be flexible with your choice and the day stays positive when something happen do not match your first choice.

If you are rigid, when you can not get your best choice in anything, the day will goes sour.

The day stays positive or goes sour is more to do with your fears to change than with reality.

Save plans for the New Year

It is about two weeks before 2009 knocks at our door!

I think I it is not a good time to start any new plans, instead, save them for the New Year.

It is good to wrap up old projects I started this year and spend some quality time tidying up my office and put all the essential things/tools in place where they belong.

I learn now that if I try to make everything happen at once, I may miss out on opportunities that come along the way.

It our nature to push and work through very busy schedule sometime, nevertheless, when we have too many projects at hand, we may not be able to cope, and frustration will be the end results!

As most of the time, ideas need time before that can evolve, we should be patience and allow things to develop and then make our move along the way.

All big achievements can only come if we have the patience to wait, to shape and to let it develop and bloom slowly.

Minus-ing and plus-ing

By your thinking, you are either adding to your good or you are taking away from it.

The law is inexorable.

Failure or lack in your life is simply the result of continuously minus-ing yourself.

Conversely, success and prosperity are the results of constantly plus-ing yourself.

-- Eric Butterworth, Spiritual Economics

Rely on someone else to make you happy?

It is when you rely on someone else to make you happy and to bring you fulfillment that you fall flat on your face.

That is when you have given up your responsibility to yourself.

-- John-Roger

Devote our life to worthwhile actions

Often we allow ourselves to be upset by small things we should despise and forget.

We lose many irreplaceable hours brooding over grievances that, in a year's time, will be forgotten by us and by everybody.

No, let us devote our life to worthwhile actions and feelings, to great thoughts, real affections and enduring undertakings.

-- Andre Maurois (1885-1967)

Become a person of value

Try not to become a man of success

but rather to become a man of value.

-- Albert Einstein

Basic nature of human beings

It is not the basic nature of human beings to be horrible.

It is the basic nature of human beings to be loving.

When humans are being horrible, it is because of something they believe.

Ask them, therefore --

even in the midst of the horror --

ask them:

What hurts you so much that you feel you have to hurt me to heal it?

-- Neale Donald Walsch

Destiny

Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice;

it is not a thing to be waited for,

it is a thing to be achieved.

-- William Jennings Bryant

Patience and persistence

Knowing trees, I understand the meaning of patience.

Knowing grass, I can appreciate persistence.

-- Hal Borland (1900-1978)

Release the fear

Even though you may want to move forward in your life, you may have one foot on the brakes.

In order to be free, we must learn how to let go.

Release the hurt. Release the fear. Refuse to entertain your old pain.

The energy it takes to hang onto the past is holding you back from a new life.

-- Mary Manin Morrissey

To be humble, to care, to be fair

When a man is humble, he can grow.

When a man cares, he is unafraid.

When a man is fair, he has enough for others.

Living a simple life means keeping our priorities in order.

-- Lao Tze

Opportunities disguised as impossible situtations

We are all faced with a series of great opportunities brilliantly disguised as impossible situations.

-- Charles R. Swindoll

Which game do you want to play

Which game do you want to play:

Who’s Right

or

Let’s Make Life More Wonderful?

-- Marshall Rosenberg

You are the light of the world

You are the light of the world. Do you not know this?

Everyone is, when they choose to be.

A city on a hill cannot be hidden.

Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bushel.

Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

-- Neale Donald Walsch

Positive thinking

Positive thinking is not the destination; it is the journey.

An optimistic person will be constantly challenged – by external circumstances as well as inner fears and doubts.

Always remember that these tests are like a ladder you must climb.

As you move past each rung, your optimism strengthens and your confidence begins to flex newly found muscle that you might never have developed otherwise.

Free will

Free will is not the liberty to do what one likes, but the power of doing whatever one sees ought to be done, even in the very face of otherwise overwhelming impulses.

There lies freedom indeed.

Simply do nothing

When I feel drained from the long week full of activities (talks, workshops, seminars, visiting exhibition, attend social functions/performance and running errands), I find it good to relax and take a break and simply do nothing.

Instead of going out and running at a busy pace, I just like to stay at home to read newspaper or catch up on some good books to calm the nerves.

Some time, if the eyes are too tired and reading become a task that is hard to accomplish, listening to music or news is a great release!

Instead of creating a busy schedule with lot of self-imposed enrichment activities, I just like to be lazy and simply do nothing!

If you think doing nothing is easy, my experience tell me that it is not.

To calm the mind is hard as we are so used to keep my mind updated with social trends, current news and knowledge acquisitions.

We need activities to make us feel that we are living!

Some joys in life do come from fruitful and meaningful activities.

Nevertheless, it's important to simply do nothing and use this space to regroup our mind.

If I utilize all the energy I can for a while, I will soon find things get hectic and beyond my control. Whenever I used to enjoy will become a task/chore that I find it hard to accompanied!

Learn to enjoy every minute of your life.

Learn to enjoy every minute of your life.

Be happy now.

Don't wait for something outside of yourself to make you happy in the future.

Think how really precious is the time you have to spend, whether it's at work or with your family.

Every minute should be enjoyed and savored.

-- Earl Nightingale (1921-1989)

It may look simple and sound easy to do so.

Nevertheless, I am trying very hard to follow the words and translating them to real life.

Some how, I can only do it once a while, now and then.

It is easy to forget about it for a long while and pick it up again here and there.

Is it not true that most of us are like that?

We are a bit absence-minded when our life is concerned. We know what we should do, yet pursuing something else and distant ourselves from it.

After going astray for a while (sometimes a long while), we would then re-look at what is our inner calling.

Even then, we take time to weight the pros and con of letting go of what we are pursuing.

It is hard to come to a decision of dropping every and learn to enjoy every minutes of our life!

So, "Learn to enjoy every minute of your life. Be happy now!"

If you are waiting for something outside of yourself to make you happy in the future. It will happen only your are the one who created or planted the seed of your own happiness now!

Cheers!

We become what we think about: Resentment, forgiveness and friendship

When you hold resentment toward another, you are bound to that person or condition by an emotional link that is stronger than steel.

Forgiveness is the only way to dissolve that link and get free.

-- Catherine Ponder

Throughout all history, the great wise men and teachers, philosophers, and prophets have disagreed with one another on many different things.

It is only on this one point that they are in complete and unanimous agreement. -

We become what we think about.

-- Earl Nightingale (1921-1989)
===========================

We become what we think about:

The only one who suffers from the resentment you have is you yourself.

The longer you hold the resentment toward that person whom you dislike, the longer you bear the feeling.

Why makes your life so miserable and bitter with bad memory or emotion that you do not like to hold nor keep?

Delete it, remove it or migrant your thought to something more positive or more joyful!

Fill your emotion/thought with things that make you feel good.

Be graceful to people who makes your life meaningful, comfortable or convenient, and pass it on...

Enjoy the company of good friends whom you make along your life journey.

In the absence of good company, have good thought that fill your empty mind.

If you find your circle of friends are not good enough, change the way you treat your friends.

As friends mirror your thought and behavior, and like-minded attracted like-minded, one can only get friends one choose to make and keep!

Instead of looking for new friends and turn good and old friends to enemies or strangers, enhance your relationship with old friends while you make new one.

Adding new friends to your life should not be at the expense of old and bona fide friends.

Old friends are like old wine, they are better with the increase in age and time!

Balance your workdays

Some time, I felt that my workdays were relatively uneventful.

For some days/weeks, I may have lot of heavy tasks to complete within short notice, a few workshops to attend in a row, and on top of that, family obligations to fulfil.

If what I feel loaded is self imposed, I will revise my schedule and re-alocate time for less urgent tasks.

If it is imposed by others, I will speak up when I feel that others aren't treating me fairly. If providing others some convenient drain me too much, I will just take a break.

Establish proper boundaries with my friends is not an issue as I have friends who are like-minded. Multi-respect for one's time and boundaries makes us good friends and that is what I treasure most!

The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes
but in having new eyes.

Courage vs Fear

Courage is not the lack of fear but the ability to face it."

-- Lt. John B. Putnam Jr. (1921-1944)

Fear is a darkroom where negatives develop.

-- Usman B. Asif

Worry gives a small thing a big shadow.

-- Swedish proverb

Keep your fears to yourself, but share your courage with others.
or

Keep your fears to yourself, but share your inspiration with others.

-- Robert Louis Stevenson

A cheerful frame of mind, reinforced by relaxation...
is the medicine that puts all ghosts of fear on the run.

-- George Matthew Adams

Every time we choose safety, we reinforce fear.

-- Cheri Huber

Too many people are thinking of security instead of opportunity.

-- James F. Bymes

Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood.

-- Marie Curie

About fears

Most fears cannot withstand the test of careful scrutiny and analysis.

When we expose our fears to the light of thoughtful examination they usually just evaporate.

-- Jack Canfield

I think when one is full of fear, it is natural that one will withdraw from any new ventures or existing tasks as fear weakens one's ability to scrutinise and analyse.

It is hard to find your way out when your world is darkened by your own fears. You need some light to shine on your dark screen. With the light on the screen, you will be able to see images in your mind more clearly and fear will slowly evaporate.

What kind of light you do you need? Some look for it in books or search the net, some just need a conversation with a close friend, others find it through religion. No fixed rules, as long as it works for you at that moment.

If it sounds familiar...

It may sound familiar to a lot of officer worker nowadays:

There is just not enough time in the workdays, from Monday to Friday.

A lot can be achieved if you stay after hours and come back on Saturday or Sunday.

The office may feel like an unusual dinner spot at first, but you will get used to it.

Off day and holiday in the office, may sound a bit odd, yet, you will get used to it.

Taking leave and going back to work for a few hours, may look funny at first. After a while, it become a norm.

Even you are on leave at home, you are clearing all the office mail and get things done before the dead line.

Working on non working days at office make you feel productive and look meaningful at the beginning.

So you have it for a year, then another year, and it never seems to be an end to it.

You know, it is not healthy for your body, your family life and your soul.

When you have experienced something like that in your work place, you will understand why some body just put a stop to it.

I have part-time teaching work/library work for over 10 years now and find life regaining its vitality and meaning.

Reflecting upon my work life in the mid and late 1990's, I know I have traded my life and time in exchange of a dream. I still have that dream, nevertheless, I am now pursuing it, in a different way!

Stop feeding adverse inner-thoughts

"Stinking thinking" is simply choosing to spend time with thoughts that cause you pain.

To feed adverse inner-thoughts with your attention is to increase your inner pain.

To keep feeding a thought after it has savagely attacked you is insane.

Yet, some of us seem to be addicted to inner-pain until the pain becomes so great we wake up.

Adverse thoughts are like magnets attracting more adverse thoughts in the same way lions are attracted to the kill.

Only in this case the "kill" is you. Thought management is such a critical skill to develop.

How can you stop thinking adverse thoughts?

It's not the thought that comes into your mind that cause the problem.

It's the thought you choose to believe. To stop feeding adverse thoughts is to stop giving them the food they need to survive and thrive - your attention.

When your attention is no longer available to them, they will move on to a weaker victim to attack.

-- Dr T. Aaron Lim

I attended a few Seminars conducted by Dr T. Aaron Lim held in TTSH, Singapore and find his advice makes me more aware of many self imposed misery cause by our own thought.

Being aware of these self imposed thought, we can eliminate them slowly and move on to something more beneficial for ourself and others!
