Definition of assessment

After conducting assessement for LAS WSQ course for a while, I was asked by many friends and counterparts in the library field who are curious about "Assessment" and how it defers from examination.

The definition of assessment from Eric Shepherd at
http://blog.sharepointlearn.com/2011/05/27/so-what-do-we-mean-by-assessments-anyway/

“any systematic method of obtaining evidence by posing questions to draw inferences about the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and other characteristics of people for a specific purpose.”

Teaching Effectiveness Program at

http://tep.uoregon.edu/workshops/teachertraining/learnercentered/assessing/definition.html

"Assessment is the process of gathering and discussing information from multiple and diverse sources in order to develop a deep understanding of what students know, understand, and can do with their knowledge as a result of their educational experiences; the process culminates when assessment results are used to improve subsequent learning."

Wikipedia at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Educational_assessment

"Educational assessment is the process of documenting, usually in measurable terms, knowledge, skills, attitudes and beliefs."
