I think this is a good video with both negative and positive examples. Information desk or circulation desk in the library are the first point library users visit, and the SMILE technique highlighted in the video is a great summary for all to remember!

On assessment
I just completed one full day of assessment for Support Acquisitions and Serials Work, WSQ/LAS Level 2 Training, on 20 Feb 2013 at Singapore Polytechnic Library.
When I look at assessment and examination, I had the following thought:
"As LAS/WDA Level 2 modules are having open book assessment, this may require trainner and assessor to create assessments that simulate real-life situations so that participants can demonstrate learning through application.
With this broader perspective, LAS/WDA assessment can be formative or summative so that it could achieve the goal of work place training."Dexterine Ho Soo Miang

Expedition to the North Pole and Jurogic
On 15 Feb 2013, I attended the "Lien Shih Sheng Youth Chinese Literature Fund-Motivational Talk talks" at Confucius Institute, NTU@one-north campus, :

* Book Launch on 猪逻辑 "Jurogic" by 小邝 Ace Khong in Mandarin

I like the talk on "Expedition to the North Pole" by Lien Choong Luen 连仲伦.
Mr Lien Choong Luen 连仲伦 graduated from the London Business School and he is an alumnus of Berkeley University, Cambridge University and University of Malaya.
A passionate adventurer, Mr Lien Choong Luen has been actively involved in various outdoor activities. These include marathons (eg. Ironman Triathlon and Gobi Desert Ultra Marathon), adventure racing, freefall parachuting and mountaineering. Some of the mountains he has scaled include Mt Cook (the tallest mountain in New Zealand) and Aconcagua (the tallest mountain in South America). His latest conquest is the world’s highest peak Mount Everest, where he spent two challenging months in this expedition.
I had heard Mr Lien Choong Luen shared his joy and hardship in many challenges in life two years ago. This time, he focus on the experiences on his expedition to the North Pole.
The challenges he had to face as well as his will and determination to accomplish the whole expedition is rather difficult for many comfortable Singaporeans to understand, especially the secondary school students who are among the audience that evening.
The part I like best was his comparison of climbing Mount Everest and the expedition experience to the North Pole:
Climbing Mount Everest, one saw different view everyday when one was at a higher point on the way up, and it was exciting to look forward to something new everyday.
While the North Pole is located in the middle of the Arctic Ocean amid waters that are almost permanently covered with constantly shifting sea ice and is also subject to the caveats.
When one is doing expedition to the North Pole, one see the same view everyday, and North Pole is covered by ice and swifting all the time.
The North Pole is one of the coldest and most remote places in the world,
overcoming the challenges and impediments in the expedition to the North Pole is rather similar to overcoming obstacles in life when you look at life in a longer perspective.
From the Q & A session, we can learn something from the younger audiences who have different concerns in life.
Listening to their questions make me think about the goal of education today:
* Are students being pushed to school by parents to obtain higher grades and they study without much inner quest and enthusiasm?
* How can they learn to treasure the material comfort of their life and excel in areas that they truely love?
* "Motivational Talk" likes this may not motivate them. Do we have inspiring story that closed to their daily life to make them feel motivated?
I left the thought sink at the moment ... and listen to the speech by the next speaker:

The new Chinese picture book 猪逻辑 "Jurogic" by Ace Khong was launched on the same evening.
Mr Ace Khong, 邝伟雄, who graduated from art school in 1998 and worked as a graphic designer for local children’s education assessment books, and advertising designer for newspaper and magazines.
The picture book 猪逻辑“Jurogic” is illustrated by the exquisite full-colour drawings through the use of mixed media, a combination of colour pencils and design software applications.
The main overall purpose of the book is to stimulate the readers through visual communication, and to use metaphors that lead readers to reason differently, and encourage them to form their own opinions that really matter in today society. The text is in Chinese and I think it has the potential of being translated into English in the future!

小邝 " 一直都有个梦想，希望可以出版属于自己的绘本。选择以小猪来担任,《猪逻辑》这个作品的主角，并没有特定的原因；只是单纯地认为小猪那种懒洋洋，善良憨厚的可爱模样，特别讨喜，所以画起来格外轻松愉快，希望读的人也能够感到亲切有趣。"

It is often asserted that discussion is only possible between people who have a common language and accept common basic assumptions.
I think that this is a mistake.

White Paper protest 2013 at Hong Lim Park
Many of us may not have a chance to be at Hong Lim Park on 16 Feb 2013. I was there for 45 mins and find it an experience for Singapore to share our common concerns. I only have the time to listen to 3-4 speakers between 5pm to 5.45pm, hence catching up the rest in e-way:

Feb 16 2012 is the 7th Day of Chinese New Year and it is called "REN RI" (Every Body's Birthday) in Chinese. What a way to make the day so memorable...
It really was part of Singapore History that "Hong Lim Park" become a true Speakers' Corner on 16 Feb 2013. I could see that there were a few thousand people turned up for the event even in drizzling and soaking wet condition.
I hope the press and media have more coverage and we can see the full picture of the views presented and analyzed by the journalists and media!

"A citizen's on-site audio recording organized of a series of 13 speeches (in chronological sequence) made by various segments of Singapore's population during a protest against the white paper on population at Hong Lim Park, 16 February 2013. The protest was organized by Transitioning.org.
This instance of recording contains statements made by the organizer, Mr Gilbert Goh & emcee, Mr Kuan before the speakers came to stage to share their thoughts.
The motivation for this series of online audio recordings is to provide an accessible resource to speeches made at Hong Lim Park that day. This provides listeners another avenue to understand what took place at the park and complement other similar resources on the Net.
Recordings lasted between 7 to 30 minutes, the longest & last segment contains the singing of the national anthem by participants, so patience is urged to obtain a fair assessment of what took place that day.
Kindly forgive missed segments or electronic noise recorded due to nearby cellular phone signals. Recording quality was affected by the rain present most of that afternoon but together with the ambient sound from participants, it is hoped that the audio atmosphere that late afternoon was faithfully captured."

In the past 20 years, he has been involved in numerous National and European projects in the library field. He has been project manager for the Dutch national programs for preservation (Metamorfoze) and digitisation (Memory of the Netherlands).
In his present position he is responsible for the Digital Library Programme of the KB with a focus on the ICT development projects and overall programme management. The area of research and development into methods and techniques for the long-term preservation of and permanent access to digital objects stored in the e-Depot has his special interest.
Bill Macnaught is the National Librarian and as ex officio member of LIAC. He came to the National Library in 2011 from Puke Ariki, a position held since 2005.
Before coming to New Zealand, he was the Director, Libraries and Arts and later Head of Cultural Development at Gateshead Council in the north of England. He was awarded a CBE in the UK for services to public libraries and cultural life.
He was Chair of the UK Advisory Council on Libraries and was a visiting Professor (Librarianship) at the University of Northumbria.
Marie-Christine Doffey has been Director of the Swiss National Library (NL) since 1 April 2005.
She completed her degree in Antiquity Studies at the University of Fribourg in 1983 and a Master of Advanced Studies in Arts Management at the University of Basel in 2002.
She has worked for the NL since 1991 and held various management positions, including that of Vice Director from 2003 to March 2005.

I like the way this seminar was chaired. Mr Gene Tan, Director of NLB was the Chair for the event and the session was well planned and with some humours that made the official event not that heavy going.
NLB Singapore is walking the same path of merging "Libraries and Archive", there are some similar issues facing library management among these three libraries. The sharing in this professional talk do lights up some thought on common issues/concerns.
Like all the future trends are something that make us look forwards to, the discussion today is just the being of the exchange, and I see the journey for convergence or divergence is a just a task handled in different ways, nothing is right, nothing is wrong, so long it suits the parties concerns!

七十年代末，本地到英国留学的大学生不多见，出身华校的女生，单枪匹马自费到威尔斯大学攻读图书馆管理的更是异类，而我正是那少数的异类。
荣誉班毕业的我最想当个老师；站在黑板前给孩子们讲课是我的理想。可惜那时候华文人才不受重视，我们这批华校生在大学期间面临上课用英语为媒介语教学的挑战，毕业后又面对失业的困境。那时的师资训练学院根本没有开办以华文为教学媒介语的课程，我的理想破灭了，加入图书馆管理员的队伍成
了我那时最好的选择。
走出国门到威尔斯大学留学开阔了我的视野，早我两年修读同个课程的学长让我体会到人间的温情。那时用英语学习的枯燥学科，学长们不吝于分享，离开时都分别把自己的笔记和相关资料代代相传。夜深人静，轻抚那画满了红蓝相间印记的笔记，仿佛听到学长们的心得分享，很快便茅塞顿开，读书、考试多了一些自信和安慰。就连住宿的地方，两个学长都是把最实用的物品像杯盘碗碟、暖气炉、桌椅等都留给下一个初到异乡的客人。这种举动让接棒的人倍感温暖。
人的一生起伏跌宕。有幸遇到的好人好事，让我们在黑暗中看到了曙光，一路走来的艰辛，很快就会被遗忘或者冲淡。我感恩这段美好的人生经历。

Thanks to LAS, I have a really wonerful New Year Party tonight!
I think I was in a lucky team "E" who won the first prize of the group game!
We were the first team finishing the stacking cups games. 10 of us, Gene Tan from NLB, Dianne, Esther and from NTU, Mustafa from TP, etc are quite fast in completing the task, even though most of us play the game first time last night.
For the guessing game that is for individual, Rajen from SMU library who was partnering with me, was quite fast in geting the answer right! The Tag "Wonder Woman" was pasted at the back of his shirt, and he can only ask question with lead to Yes and No answer.
He is logical, and with some clues here and there, he have the right answer within 15 question. Maybe both of us were reference librarians in our library roles before, we have references linked together, hence, he was able to connect and come out with the answer before the other half of the participants!
What I like best is the gift exchange programme.
We were asked to form a big circle, and have our left hand hold on to our own present, and the right hand empty.
When the music start, we passed our own present to our neighbours at our left end and received new present from the one on our right. We are so engrossed in our present passing game, and did not notice the music had stop. Hence, some who were quick enough may had no present in both hands, those who are slow, will hold on to two presents in both hands.
We have the passing game play with two round of music, and those who are holding onto one present will get the present in their hand and allowed to sit down.
Those who are holding on to two presents or without any present were asked to re-do the game till all of them are able to get one present.
I like the efficiency of present exchange this way:
* All the gift are passed through your hands and you get to touch and feel the individual gift personally!
* Whether you like the gift or not, you have no time to think and hold on to it until the music stop.
* Save a lot of time tagging the present, calling names, collection items. The logistic is great!
As all the game and eating was done so efficiently, we have the event and party ended around 8.30pm, half an hour before the scheduled time!
I still like to have some more fun, yet all the participants were rushing home... So, I just have to leave with them and feel a bit "half full" in my joyful mood of NEW Year Party!
Maybe, Friday night is a bit too long for most librarians who started the day early in the morning. Maybe, if we have it on a non working day, we will have more time and in better mood to make the programme last longer!

In my life journey, I learn through sharing ideas in library courses etc... (LAS WAS courses for HCLIS and INNO HANDS-ON workshop for Schools, Libraries and other organisations)
I find I have new thought and ideas generated from books I read, pinterest I pin, friends and librarians I met and many course participants I interact with!
Without these ideas and interaction that light the candles in my life journey, the road I travel will be rather dim and dark and I may not find my way!

For over two years, Saturday evening gathering at my mum's apartment around 8.00 pm to 9.30pm has been "Fun with Handicrafts" night for my junior relatives!
Art and craft is rather addictive for kids! When they have completed one piece of craft work, the next minute they will ask for new ones to do!
If I am out for dinner or attending talks/events on Saturday night, they will be very disappointed and other stand-by commercial DIY kits may be used to keep them occupied. Yet, they prefer *"Er Yi Po"* Dexterine's creative ways of teaching! Learning from the Mastermind, according to them, is more fun and easy!
Note: "Er Yi Po" is "Second great-aunt" in English" pronounced in Mandarin.
Most of them are just pre-schoolers, and they enjoy paper cut-out, heart-shape pop-up, 3D works, origami and many other kinds of paper craft I teach in Schools and Libraries!
To them, cutting is interesting, drawing is challenging and pasting is difficult!
Yet, they amaze their parents by how creative they can be!
I enjoy the time spent with them, and it is their love of art and craft that unveils their creativity in many other fields! They learn to look at things in detail, and see things in their own way which is different from other kids! I am glad that I am a candle to brighten their path in their quest for creativity!
Many family members do not see the value of art and craft until they see how kids transform themselves through innovative art and craft done at home! Their creativity move their ideas and love in craft work beyond the art zone and their attention span and quest for learning is extended very much beyond kids of the same age!
The Golden Snake year in 2013 will be another great year for their quest in "Art and Craft!"

I find Aaron's words tell the feeling of some librarians like him. I just like to add one word "Librarians" to the last sentence I quoted:
"Librarians and libraries have potential to make a difference and yet it seems obstacles in our path often seem insurmountable."
I was a librarian for over 2 decades, and now a Library Trainer for LAS/WSQ lever 2 courses and a lecturer for INNO HANDS-ON which run courses related to Library Display, Book Making and School Displays etc . I see the roles of Librarians having the same potential like Aaron, yet I choose to travel a different path.
Indeed, the obstacles in our path maybe insurmountable, yet, if we impart our knowledge and skills, share our passions and visions, the part may be less insurmountable!
Doing the jobs of librarianship is tough! Only librarians know, I believe!
Training others to do a good job, though is not insurmountable, it is a difficult task!
To me, when I took a new path and travelled the difficult route, The new experience and path can turn out to be joyful and fulfiling.
I guess it is a joy to find a new way to do similar things and the opportunities to meet new friends in the journey that make all the different!
In LAS/WSQ courses, there are many like minded who have the same passion and willing to work together. Having so little resources, yet, we are able to generate a 5 Modules HCLIS (Higher Certificate in Library and Information Studies) and keep it going for over 3 years. For these few years, over 7-8 run for each modules were well received by participants. The course tailored to meet the needs of support staff also attracted a new group of participants who hold degrees or higher degree in other field. This show that it is well received not just by participants, but chief librarian from many Singapore Libraries.
Hence, I now find the journey is a present one with great learners to cheer our way!
Have a Happy 2013 and a Cheerful Chinese New Year!

咖啡山的墳墓 (Bukit Brown Cemetery)

Bukit Brown Municipal Cemetery first started in the early 20th century, some of its old graves were re-interned here. As a government cemetery, it is regretable that nowadays they no longer maintain this cemetery, and let the wild grass and undergrowth swamped this place, making the place difficult to navigate for desecendants to come to pay respect to their ancestors during Qing Ming. Sometimes it is difficult to move in certain parts of the cemetery, as a result many graves have been abandoned.
The relevant department should have taken more care of this government cemetery, and maintain it properly. If they forsake this cemetery, it is as if to let people forget about this place. Forgetting this place is like forgetting the history and heritage of this nation. This time, for the proposed exhumation of the graves, although the authorities have engaged specialists to do docmentation, but these are but photographic and written documentation, the original gravestones would probably be destroyed.
Development is a sign of modernization, but not at the expense of historical culture. The graves at Bukit BRown are the best historical artifacts. It is really hope that the authorities would pay more attention to the preservation of Bukit Brown and not destroy it in the sake of development

新加坡墳墓田野工作者發現有精美雕刻的古墓之一。

趁著到新加坡推介新書及喪禮講座之際，受到當地墳墓田野工作者吳安全、林志強二君，以及洪毅翰君的邀約陪同，走了一趟咖啡山公塚之旅。公塚佔地400多依格，共有約20萬個墳墓。2011年6月，新加坡政府為了開闢一條新的公路，徵用這裡的土地，影響到4千多個墳墓必須搬遷。因為這樣，引起墳墓田野工作者到來展開尋墓活動，尤其吳安全，幾乎每個星期天都來到這裡尋墓，精神可嘉！
咖啡山公塚在20世紀初葉才開發為公塚，分為武吉布朗墳場及王氏太原堂墳場，其中一部份古墓是從他處移葬此處，本來屬於華人民間宗鄉會所管理，數十年前歸政府管轄，可是有關當局完全置之不理，任由樹木野草叢生，將墳墓纏繞得密密麻麻，真的苦了孝子賢孫在清明節掃墓，很多地方連進都進不了，根本寸步難行，因此眾多墳墓已經多年沒人來祭拜。
當局不應該如此對待華人公塚，理應清理美化，也方便孝子賢孫掃墓祭拜。將公塚當做棄兒，似乎要人們忘了它，忘了公塚就是忘了國家歷史文化。這次遷墓，當局雖有僱請專家做墳墓調查及收集資料，可是那只是文字及圖片資料，原有文物將被摧毀不存。發展是時代進步的象徵，可是發展不應該忽略歷史文化，墳墓就是最好的歷史文化實物，冀望當局多多關注及保存咖啡山，儘量不要再為了發展而又打這裡的主意！
新加坡地少人多，大自然的山林極少，除了墳墓田野工作者每週到這裡尋墓，自然協會的朋友也來這裡觀鳥及認識植物。於是每週這裡都有專人帶團導覽觀鳥看樹兼訪墳墓的活動，吳安全及其弟為了方便人們訪墓，做了很多記號及指示說明。華人對公塚是萬分避忌，不過洋人卻不忌諱，住在新加坡的洋人當這裡是個運動散步的公園，有全家推著嬰兒車到來散步的，有來遛狗的，有父子或夫妻齊跑步的，甚至年輕洋妹跑步到山裡去，可見新加坡的治安真的好。
吳安全從2011年6月開始每週到這裡尋墓，找到了許多清朝古墓，一些草樹叢生無法進入的，他從導覽團樂捐來的錢，用在請人砍樹除草，使到古墓重見天日，這些清理費用已經花了數千新幣。他在這裡找到以街道命名的新加坡“路名”先賢之墓有30多個，也找到早期首富章芳林家族、顏永成家族、林文慶家族等望族墓群。有一天，一位老人托他尋找一個墳墓，給他逝者名字及死亡日期等資料，說此人乃馬來西亞首相署部長許子根的祖父許永起。他先翻找檔案簿，再到公塚去找，果然給他找到了，卻無法聯絡到那位老人了。至於林志強，他注重的是國民黨、共和黨及小刀會人物的墳墓，也給他找到很多個相關的墳墓。
我跟著他們走，參觀了暹羅領事兼英國甲必丹陳金鐘墓、丘菽園墓（此墓受到築路影響須遷移），還有來自印尼擁有“雷珍蘭”等勳銜人物墓、祖籍南京的大天球馬戲團創辦人之墓、許永起墓（多年沒人掃墓，雜草嚴重覆蓋）、清朝知事、進士等人物墓，以及許多古墓及雕刻精美奇特的墳墓等，真令我獲益良多。
一些墳墓野草樹木密密麻麻覆蓋，他們逕直走進去，不怕野獸蛇蟲，可見勇氣膽識過人，我倒是有點擔心的。這方面我比較差勁，一般上我是選擇在清明節前後公塚除草後才尋墓。實在欣賞敬佩他們的執著及愛心，這個工商社會需要像他們這樣的傻瓜，來做一些沒人願作卻有意義的傻事！

I enjoy sharing my library knowledge and skills in art and craft with like-minded people.
The LAS WSQ courses for support staff has five modules, and I am involved in the assessment for all and training for some.
The library display courses and book making workshop is just an extension of my library and book knowledge. As art and craft is my hobby, merging the two is a natural process in my teaching and learning journey.
The gift wrapping course was an accidental result of some external consultancy courses I conducted for IRBD (International Relationship and Business Development, Temasek Polytechnic.
In addition, the Christmas library display I created for NTU library some years back have also attracted a lot of interest from both librarians and non librarians.
I was very honoured to be invited to Singapore Police Force HQ at Cantonment for a Christmas Gift Wrapping Workshop on 13 Dec 2012. It is unique in my training experience, as I never expected to meet Police officers as my course participants.
Equally interesting is the Gift Wrapping Workshop I held at Jurong Point Mall on 8 Dec 2012.
With this experience, I understand that commercial malls also provide learning spaces for the public. The Learning Corner in Jurong Point Mall is a new idea and it is sets up in the mall in a quiet corner. It is a great learning place for students when not used in conducting courses.
I think reading rooms and learning spaces like that will really enhance the life of the consumers. I see the value of the "Learning Corner" and am glad to be one of the Workshop trainers in their Christmas programme.
Training consumers and not teachers and librarians is new to me. They come in all ages, some are as old as 60+, and the youngest are school girls/boys from Primary and Secondary level!
Life is interesting as we do not know what will come next!

LAS group visiting Heritage Conservation Centre
Today I followed LAS Programmes and Social Committee to visit Heritage Conservation Centre (HCC).

The bus stop to alight from is located just opposite the Centre.

As all visitors have to place their bags in lockers provided before the start of the tour. No audio-visual equipment/photography within the premises and storage areas.
We are advised to come in good walking shoes and bring along a light sweater as the Centre is cold for human traffic.

Closing date for registration: 28 December 2012, I was glad to be one of them!

About Heritage Conservation Centre
The Heritage Conservation Centre is a repository and conservation facility for museum artefacts and artworks that belong to the collections of the 3 National Museums in Singapore, under the National Heritage Board.
In other words, it houses and preserves artefacts that are not on display to the public. The roles also include "Provision of Heritage Collections Management Services - Documentation, Inventory, Storage and Preventive Conservation."

Heritage Conservation Centre is currently with only 58 full time staff, and I am amazed that they have done so much with so little manpower!

I just viewed the videos this morning and find it enlightening to learn about her life in restrospect!
How wealth, family and politics are being linked together in the past and it is a good mirror for us to see the present.
With this understanding, it is easier to understand the complex connections in present day China and the political links great family worked together to make things happen in the east or the west ...
Being NO BODY, we are able to view this kind of development from a distance and have a clearer mind set!
